I stand corrected
I’ll be switching over to K.C-Baltimore before the Brewers-Mets game this late afternoon. I had read incorrectly that they were teeing off at 4:38. Incidentally, I love that the underrated offensive threat, Vinnie Pasquantino has been cleared to play for the Royals.

The best thing about the Wild Card round
Because of MLB’s greed and hubris, they have to cram a bunch of WC games into single days and are forced to televise a couple afternoon games immediately. I won’t pretend to applaud their choices for broadcast teams because I dislike too many guys and pairings. After a half day of work/training at my new…

Game 161
Initially, I thought I’d be attending game 162 as well, but circumstances including a new venture ended my regular season yesterday afternoon at Wrigley Field. For the most part, the weather was perfect for a ball game-unless you were a hitter hoping to pad your stats. I don’t remember attending a game with perpetually grey…

Getting the postseason right
A local sports columnist suggested that he would be fine with the Dodgers and Yankees facing off in the World Series would be fine with him-especially if we could play the Series starting on Tuesday. That most fans would probably like to see Ohtani & Co. do battle with Judge Inc. isn’t too far off…

R.I.P Al McCoy!
Sometimes when a notable character passes away you have to dig pretty deeply to find useful tributes. Thankfully, arizonasports came through in a pinch. I was introduced to Al on one of my first trips to the Valley in 2005 or 06 and continued to listen to him as I covered the AFL and attended…

Talk about overreacting
It’s neither the time nor the place to start skewering the experts for their preseason picks. That can wait, but I will discuss the folly of early season overreactions, both good and bad. Can you imagine a baseball player starting the year 3-18 and hearing murmurs about skills eroding? That same guy, Luis Arraez, now…

Bob Lanier is rolling over in his grave.
It seems like a thousand years ago when Larry Dierker left the Astros television booth for the Houston dugout, but it was only 1997. Dierker spent the majority of his playing career with the Astros and like former players in the booth, had a pretty good understanding of the game and the team. The Cubs…

A clean sweep!
Congratulations to the Kane County Cougars for winning the Miles Wolff Cup, aka the American Association’s championship. They made quick work of the Winnipeg Goldeyes last night dispatching Winnipeg 5-3. The Cougars swept each of the three postseason series for their first title since winning the MWL crown in 2014 as the Cubs low-A affiliate.

Deal or no deal?
With some NFL teams sitting at 0-2, I know fans and pundits have already declared seasons a bust and certain player acquisitions even bigger busts. I’m not worried about the NFL or its teams, but I appreciate the rush to judge. It’s what fans do. With only 12 games left in the regular season, it’s…

The road to a championship runs through Winnipeg..
The first think you see when you enter the right field gate at Northwestern Medicine Field in Genea, Illinois is the reminder that the Kane County Cougars are two-time MWL champs. The Cougars won their first MWL title in 2001 when they were a Marlins affiliate. Their last title came in 2014 with the young…
