It bears repeating that Shohei Ohtani is the best player in the game right now. However, that doesn’t mean he’s having the best season and that he should be handed the MVP for the NL this season. Despite going 0-5 in each of the last two games, Pete Crow-Armstrong should be named NL MVP. Cub fans assume that this slump is temporary and that’ll he rebound in time for the postseason.
What’s refreshing about the season PCA is having is that he’s hitting for average as well as power. I’m tired of seeing every alleged power hitter taking credit for hitting a robust .226. Suffice to say, he’s not the only guy with 30+ homers that’s hitting for average.
Teams and pitchers will try and make adjustments to PCA’s better eye and approach at the plate. To keep pace and accelerate his positive trajectory, he’ll have to make adjustments too and he’ll need to get more support from his teammates.
Having a vested interest in his success, I assume that he is trending positively (with bumps along the way), but I’m willing to accept that there’s no guarantee-that’s what makes baseball wonderful.
