Heading into tonight’s game with the Pirates, I realized for the first time in years I wasn’t excited about the game. It seems as if the fans and media are at odds with the Cubs braintrust, if there is one.
Everyone who cares has thoughts about how they can shake this 9-game slog. When the Cubs were in the middle of their two, 10-game winning streaks, we weren’t allowed to try and figure out how they were winning, as all of us bought the, piling up wins garbage. Sports fans hate to face hard truths and even though Chicago has recently gone through this ritual with the Bears, we don’t realize we’re repeating the exercise. Spectacular come from behind wins require the team to be in trouble, so that they have to come from behind. Seemingly Caleb Williams won games in the last few minutes of several games. His spectacular play obscured the team’s many flaws.
I work with a guy who wasn’t willing to admit that the Cubs might not have been the second coming of the 2016 Cubs and mocked those that might have had some doubts. Since the Cubs settled on Alex Bregman and Edward Cabrera this off season, a number of fans called into question Hoyer’s resolve and yet others praised him for spending a few bucks even if his roster construction was severely flawed.
Until they finally win a game or two, we’re destined to play, what might have been. I don’t intend to waste my energy on such a fruitless endeavor.
For the love of Bill Bonham, win a damn game!
