In a little more than two hours, millions of folks will be sitting in front of their televisions for this year’s Kentucky Derby. Tens of thousands will be at Churchill Downs or somewhere in Louisville. Outside of horseracing enthusiasts, I get the feeling that more sports fans have the Derby and Triple Crown on their sports bucket list.
People have bucket lists for all sorts of hobbies and interests, but most of us think of sports lists. Enthusiasts pursue such diverse things as museums, national parks, amusement parks, arenas, ballparks, tournaments, operas, concerts etc. I’ve never been to the Derby, but when I was in Louisville, a decade ago for baseball, I made a point of catching a race at Churchill and like a good tourist I indulged in a mint julep and saw my pick cross the finish line a winner. There is plenty to see and do in Louisville over the course of a long weekend. Regardless of the theme, bucket lists allow one to visit different parts of the country or world and expand one’s horizons.
If you’re betting today, I wish you well as I don’t have a horse in this race.
