I’ve drifted back to 1998 several times this season for personal and professional reasons. Aside from the surprising run that the Cubs went on and the historic home run chase, the Yankees began their mini-dynasty in 1998.
And were it not for a Brewers radio broadcast, I would have omitted that from my list/memories of the season 25 years ago. Instead, I found this story about today’s Old-timer’s Day at Yankee Stadium. Without any connection to the franchise, it’s objectively cool what both New York teams do for their fans. In similar fashion, the Cubs will be honoring Shawon Dunston and Mark Grace tomorrow at Wrigley. they are joining the Cubs Hall of Fame. Grace was a member of the 1998 Cubs while Shawon split the season between Cleveland and San Francisco. His only appearance against the Cubs came in Game 163 where he went 1-1 in the loss which put the Cubs in the wildcard spot.
Both players were fan favorites, and one of the two could have kept the Wrigleyville saloons in business during the lockdown. It should be a great day at the park on Sunday.
