Is it just the money?

The Mets owner, Steve Cohen has shown that money (his) is no object, exceeding the luxury threshold and then some. By now, everyone is aware of his failed attempt to land free agent shortstop/third baseman Carlos Correa.

The 2022 Mets won 101 regular season games-which was the same as the NL East-winning Braves, but forced them into a wild card series with the Padres. Not satisfied with the finish and seeing the 3rd place Phillies advance to the World Series, Cohen is all-in on the 2023 season.

He’s made several additions to the club and doesn’t appear to be finished in his quest to improve the left side of the infield. There are some options which include rookie, Brett Baty. While it appears he’s just throwing lots of money around, there does appear to be some method to his madness. We’ll see how it works out in the end.

I’ve linked to an MLB.com story about Baty and his role in the 2023 season. Players do appreciate getting the opportunity to compete for a spot. Some teams choose to hand positions to players who haven’t necessarily earned it. I’ll be posting about two very different approaches later today in the White Sox and Braves.

One response to “Is it just the money?”

  1. Interesting. I wish the Mets trained in AZ so I could get a look at him. I am not familiar with Baty or Vientios and don’t even mention Eduardo Escobar to me.
