Parade Magazine has started with the commemorating, in this case 1973. While I won’t worry about their particular take on the year, I do like to guess what different ML teams will be doing to recognize teams and players this year.
Fifty years ago, the Oakland A’s were in the middle of their 3-year dynasty so I don’t expect them to do anything for the ’73 team specifically and since the Mets won it all in 1986, they probably will give Yogi and the gang short shrift.
However, other franchises will take advantage of the year and do some interesting things to get butts in the seats. For example, 30 years ago, the Blue Jays won their second World Series title and haven’t been to the series since then.
Closer to home, 1983 was very significant for baseball fans in Chicago. The winning ugly White Sox became the first ML team in Chicago to appear in the playoffs. After a pleasantly surprising 2022, maybe the Orioles will do something to honor the WS champion 83 team.
While the Cubs entered the playoff fray a season later, it was 20 years ago that the Cubs fell short against the WS champion Marlins. And who could forget the memorable 1998 season when Kerry Wood made his rookie debut, Sammy Sosa and Mark McGwire took aim at Roger Maris.
I was reminded by a friend that 2023 would be our 40th high school reunion, it’s also the 50the anniversary of the designated hitter, and the 90th year since the first All-Star game. The list goes on and I’m certain clever PR departments and writers will unearth many other anniversaries.
I hope to catch come of these and look forward to hearing about any experiences you enjoy this season. No, I won’t be posting about the 40th reunion.
