As someone not especially fond of SEC sports, I’ve been waiting to yell this from the top of a mountain. I’m not sure if this specific team is any more annoying than those coached by Nick Saban, but I am happy that they lost to this particular Hoosiers football team. A team led by a coach that seems to embody what college athletics was all about before portals, pay for play and NIL’s. I have no idea what Indiana’s payroll is or how many guys backed out of the playoffs.
One final thought, remember 1976.

I’m trying to wrap my head around what college football is right now. I know it’s not college football as we knew it growing up when players, with a few exceptions, played out their eligibility with one school. I also know it’s not a minor league like the MiLB, AHL or the NBA’s developmental league. Those leagues don’t have multi-million-dollar TV deals and venues holding up to 100,000 fans.
I’ve tried to classify this monster into something familiar, but I just can’t. The closest I’ve come is to liking it to the pre-Branch Rickey minor leagues, where independent teams competed for players not quite ready for the major leagues.
However, this scenario lacks the well-healed boosters, who seem to be around every football program. Wouldn’t the Memphis Redbird fans love it if local car dealers, lawyers and restaurant owners poured millions of dollars into bringing top young prospects to town to hone their skills for a few years?

Thanks Russ for your time and thoughts. I don’t think loyalty will ever be valued in college sports again. Everyone is looking out for themselves in favor of the greater good.
