Earlier today, Troy Aikman discussed the relationship between coaches and quarterbacks and said that too often high draft picks often are failed by their coaches/organizations but are blamed for failing their teams. He said that Norv Turner elevated the play of the Cowboys team he played for and said that some other quarterbacks benefited from equally impressive coaches. I don’t think he was exculpating players generally, rather he was stressing the importance of good coaching.
Because MLB has a structured development system and players have more time to absorb coaching, I’m not sure it’s an apt analogy, however I will consider the general premise in a future post.
