I’m not going to lie, I’m really disappointed by the Brewers showing thus far in the NLCS. I thought they’d give the Dodgers better competition considering how well they played them (7-0) in the regular season. The only chance they had of winning was when Captain Hook pulled Blake Snell after 8 innings of shutout ball and turning things over to an iffy bullpen. He had no momentary lapses in judgement during Game 2.
After the Mariners took the first two games of the ALCS in Toronto, I feared that the series would end before things got interesting. More importantly, the crew calling the game and producing said telecast believed the Jays were doomed. Unfortunately, the FOX duo of Schmaltz and Davis got in the way of a great rebound. We don’t need a Kirk Gibson moment for the broadcaster (Vin Scully) to be quiet and let the moment breathe. It’s bad enough that the pregame trio on FOX spend 110% of the time talking about themselves. There’s no reason to have pregame shows before each game in a series. I learned this when Kevin Kennedy and Jeanne Zelasko ruined the postseason on FOX years ago. Editor’s note: Neither my mute button nor volume work.
I think the broadcast crew was more shocked than Seattle’s fans with George Kirby’s implosion. Even as everyone was beating the crap out of him, they were still prattling on about his arsenal. I think they were a little disappointed that Andres Gimenez‘s second inning home run was what got the ball rolling for Toronto and not Vlad Jr.
What makes sports great is seeing how carefully constructed narratives can collapse when humans are involved and not ghost runners.
Continued success to the Jays, and good luck to Milwaukee this afternoon. More competitive series are always better.
