With a marquee NFL game on tonight I don’t expect many of my Cub fan friends and relatives will be checking into the Seattle-Toronto opener tonight. Heck, I’m a little surprised I have the unwatchable FOX pregame show, but I’m curious to see if they will mention the Expansion 77 aspect.
I’m betting the same Cub fans aren’t as interested in following the Brewers as I am. I’m less worried about the outcome of the ALCS but am rooting for Milwaukee to rep the NL and finally win it all. The Mariners have never even been to the World Series.
Since the Jays have already won consecutive Championships in 1992-93, they’ll have several worthy choices to honor and throw out first pitches. I’m always curious about those things, but would lovae to see someone like John Olerud who played for both teams. Back in 1977 MLB welcomed Toronto and Seattle and both teams settled in the AL and remember it like it was yesterday. Rather I recall the outcome of the expansion draft if not the process. Looking back at the rosters (which I did earlier today) I didn’t recognize any studs which isn’t to say a couple guys didn’t distinguish themselves. Rather, both teams opted for credibility with picks like Ron Fairly. As is always the case with expansion drafts, a handful of players will get the chance to finally get a chance.
As I type, thousands of Cub fans and media types in Chicago are trying to explain what went wrong and why the Brewers are still playing. I’m afraid that it might be as simple as having the home field advantage and earning that right. I’m pretty sure that the powers that be, at Clark & Addison don’t get it.
On a side note, I learned that I will have to cough up more money next season if I want to watch the Cubs on the Marquis Network. I actually watched more of the crew and even started warming up to Boog Sciambi not to the point I’ll pay extra though. Thankfully, I can listen to games on the radio or attend in person. No matter what that clown of a commissioner believes that personal connection is essential.
Hopefully, the production crew at FOX will cut away from the pregame show and go to the field. Those guys are too busy congratulating one another and reliving Boxton-NYY history.
Enjoy tonight’s game instead of watching Patrick Mahomes.
