Day one of the wild card series is in the books and I’ve already forgotten about the NFL. The Cubs won their first postseason game since 2017 or so I’ve been told. After watching most of the first two games and some of the third game, I can’t say I was wowed by any of the broadcast crews. And that’s not a bad thing as the games spoke for themselves.
A local media critic suggested the wrong crew was calling the Cubs-Padres game and that the guys who cover the Cubs on a regular basis would have been the better choice. I’ve personally preferred the less biased calls and have always found the better broadcasters can adapt to their surroundings and have the ability to immerse themselves in the local scene. This isn’t to say that there aren’t different classes of folks calling games and reporting. Some of the voices are acquired tastes for sure, but the play on the field usually speaks for itself.
I’m definitely willing to overlook any shortcomings that the ABC crew have if the Cubs sweep the Padres out of Wrigley this afternoon as I head off to work.
