As Cubs management and Cub fans weigh the merits of offering Kyle Tucker buckets of money to continue playing for the team beyond 2025, thoughts of another Kyle. In case you missed it, former Cub Kyle Schwarber hit four homers last night to boost his season total to 49, the same number that Tucker (21) and Pete Crow-Armstrong (28) have hit.
In parts of six seasons, Schwarbs hit 121 homers for the Cubs, and in the five years since leaving Chicago, he’s blasted an additional 212. I don’t know of a single Cub fan that begrudges him any of his success. And unlike Lou Brock, Theo & Company got nothing for him. They stupidly didn’t make an offer to him after the 2020 season and the Cubs have been looking for legit power ever since.
I’m not sure that I trust these guys to make the right decisions, and hiding under cover of an owner unwilling to spend big, isn’t a viable excuse since they’re paying the manager record money. They clearly didn’t spend much time worrying about roster construction heading into the season.
