As I’ve discussed with a couple friends recently, having season tickets can be both a blessing and a curse-regardless of the form of entertainment. One usually gets a discount and you get unfettered access to the better seats. However, feels a certain obligation to attend no matter what.
For the most part, I’m able to attend the games I want to given certain constraints-most of which have tightened as I’ve aged. Distance to ballparks, price, weather and my ability to bring my zoom lens have had profound effects on my attending games.
Even after all the games I’ve seen over the years, I haven’t taken attending games for granted. The idea continues to put a smile on my face. I remain a sucker for a clever giveaway, but won’t break my back chasing anything down.
And given how I’m not exactly the fan the White Sox are pursuing, they won’t mind that I won’t be attending this evening’s game between the Sox and Guardians at the Rate. That won’t stop me from patting them on their collective backs.
Tonight’s game will be a celebration of all things Bill Veeck, the two-time owner of the Sox and master promoter. While not a Sox fan, I thoroughly enjoyed the Comiskey Park experience of Veeck II. He was the kind of owner that fans dream of-a man of the people.
Here’s the briefest of articles highlighting tonight’s gimmicks. Over the years some of his promotions succeeded and others were epic failures, like Disco Demolition (although that helped launch a local radio personality’s career).
Chicago White Sox To Host ‘Bill Veeck Night’ At Rate Field
Sox fans these days expect more from the players than goofy schtick, but there’s nothing wrong with having fun at the old ballpark. Somewhere Andy the Clown is smiling.
