Depending when you are reading this, the Cubs have either the best or third best record in all of baseball. Offense hasn’t been the problem this season except when an inferior offensive team comes to town. Laugh with me.
As a Cub fans, I’m tired of hearing two things this year, one being their home run superiority and now that it’s heating up in Chicago, balls will be flying out of Wrigley.
Someone on the Cubs broadcast (today) pointed out that the Royals have one of the worst slugging percentages in the game. Conversely and implied in everything the two booths have been preaching since Jerry Morales left town is how great the Cubs are. Of course, baseball happened as the so-so Royals took two of three this week and outhomered the Cubs 8-4. Rookie third baseman, Matt Shaw surprised everyone with two of the four homers. However, the Cubs stole seven bases in Tuesday night’s 6-0 victory. I love the stolen base more than most fans-primarily because it puts pressure on the defensive team. That’s not to say that any of the stolen bases last night were anything more than gilding the lily.
Thank God for Matthew Boyd! Forner Cub Rich Hill has garnered a lot of press for his resurrection and return to the Bigs at the age of 45, but his success will have little impact on the Cubs this year. Much Ilke Boyd finding himself at age 34, Royals starter and today’s winner, Seth Lugo has gotten much better since turning 34. While he toggled between the rotation and pen with the Mets for much of his career, he’s reached a new level with the Royals and would be a positive acquisition should the Cubs go that route.
