While some in the local sports media are shocked that the Brewers have temporarily caught up with the Cubs, their collective harrumphing if falling on deaf ears because the Bears are reporting to camp this week. I’m not complaining there isn’t a greater public outcry because those on the Cubs radio network have misread the season to date.
Even if Cubs fans and the media are getting a little skittish about the postseason, their situation might not be as dire as I’m suggesting. What’s unfortunate is the lack of ink the White Sox are receiving (locally and nationally). While I don’t have anything on the line with the Sox this year, it’s a big deal that they just swept the woeful Pirates at PNC this weekend. It’s really difficult to get excited about a 35-65 record, but they are only 7 wins away from bettering last season’s record. The Rockies are currently 24-75 (.242) and on pace to be worse than the ’24 Sox. With 63 games to play Colorado needs only 18 games to escape the ignominy of the worst record in modern ML history. Every so often the Rockies appear to be playing better ball and avoiding history, but then their absolute awfulness emerges. It’s not likely to be as enthralling as the home run race, but it should be as dramatic for Sox fans and members of the ’24 team.
