It’s pretty uncommon that both the White Sox and Cubs will be at home at the same time. In the past you’d read accounts of intrepid fans that would catch both games via the Red Line. Yesterday, Mother Nature intervened as both games were postponed hours before first pitch.
Because the Cubs and Cards play within the same division, rescheduling that game immediately whereas the Sox won’t see the Cards again this season and are forced to play two games today. It seems like Mother Nature is cooperating and fans can enjoy a rare two-fer. Coincidentally, I’m finalizing plans for a trip to STL next week when I’ll see the Cubs play the Cards. Last May, I was in STL to see the Sox and Cards play a 10-inning nail biter which was interrupted by a 3-hour+ rain delay.
While I’m not a fan of the majority of ML games being played at night, I understand the thinking. Likewise, I understand why minor league teams (and leagues) cut back on the number of afternoon games. However, I don’t understand why the summer college leagues play so many Sunday games in the early evening. It can’t be for the lucrative television contracts, because there aren’t any. Nobody benefits from games starting at 4-6p.m on Sundays. With my STL trip planned for midweek, I had hoped to see a minor league or summer league game this Sunday in either Wisconsin or Iowa, but late first pitches might deter me. I find as I get older and traffic on area highways becomes crazier, being on the road at 9p.m. on a Sunday night seems less attractive no matter how many cotton candies I consume.
