By now you’ve probably heard the news about Pete Rose and Shoeless Joe Jackson and Rob Manfred. I’m linking to the USA Today account anyhow. Maybe this will help you formulate your own position on the situation.
I’m a guy pretty hard and fast on rules being enforced and not just in baseball, but the way professional sports has jumped into the sack with betting is pretty ugly. Nobody has proven to me that play on any of the fields has improved because of this ugly marriage and maybe more importantly nobody has shown how it’s improved my life. I think it’s had a deleterious impact on both.
Often lost in these stories is the fact that Rose agreed to the deal with MLB and Commissioner Giamatti (and he had legal representation). Folks seem to misunderstand “permanent.”
