Growing up as a Cubs fan, in the pre-lights era, I attended more than a few doubleheaders at Wrigley. Whether scheduled, or as part of a makeup. they always fit them in before dinner. One of the joys was watching on Channel 9, WGN. Jack Brickhouse would often offer an abbreviated 10th inning between the games, and Jim West would only do one leadoff man show. It also meant that Paul Popovich or Cleo James might get a start in game two. In later years, Davey Rosello or Mick Kelleher would get that rare start.
Attending one of these weekday twin bills was a different sort of pleasure, it meant buying two scorecards and filling both out with all of the different lineups.
I can’t imagine anyone attending yesterday’s 1:20 game between the Diamondbacks and the Cubs thought they’d see two games for the price of one. Without going into the particulars, because my head would explode, I’ll explain.
The Cubs won the first game 2-1, your typical pitchers’ duel. We’ll say that the weather dictated pitchers keep the ball down and let the fielders do the rest. The second game was atypical of mid-April Wrigley conditions. Nobody could keep the ball down or in the park as the Cubs won this one 11-10.
For those of you that didn’t read about the game or catch any highlights, the Cubs and Diamondbacks only played one game yesterday and the Cubs won 13-11 in dramatic fashion. In actuality, there were two different games within the larger game.
As was the case back in 1998 when Kerry Wood pitched his 20-K masterpiece, thousands will claim they were at the game. The bigger question is how many people will buy tickets for today’s game hoping for a repeat performance? Chicagoans know that the likelihood of that happening again and with today’s forecast, it’s more likely that the Bulls will win a playoff series this season.
It is never over until it’s over, but nobody in the media claimed to hear a fat lady singing either.
