The Bears interim head coach Thomas Brown may or may not be a legit candidate for the full time gig. Regardless of who the next coach is, the skeptics, cynics, realists, pundits and experts all believe ownership and their latest flunkies, Kevin Warren and Ryan Poles will probably screw it up.
Since they fired Mike Ditka, a lifetime ago, they haven’t gotten the head coaching thing right. Lovie Smith might have been an exception had he ever figured out that offense thing, but everyone else was an epic failure. Dave Wannstedt was doomed an not just because he was Ditka’s immediate successor, but because he was a second banana at best. In typical Chicago fashion, he’s landed in Chicago as an analyst which couldn’t be funnier or more ironic as nobody in town thought that highly of him when he was out the door. Imagine Jim Riggleman and Terry Bevington providing analysis for the Cubs and White Sox respectively.
Back to why this is important and timely. Amidst all the Bears nonsense came the news that Andrew Luck is the new GM of football for Stanford University. I have no idea what a GM of a particular college sport’s duties are but bringing back Luck to the Cardinal sounds like a savvy P.R move at the very least and it comes on the heels of a similar move in MLB.
Buster “Don’t come sliding into me” Posey was just named President of Baseball Operations for the Giants. Buster spent his entire playing career with the Giants and hasn’t exactly risen through the ranks of the front office. Everyone assumes that former catchers are ideally suited for other baseball opportunities.
There are as many examples of successful moves from the playing field to the dugout or front office as there have been failures. Fans of every university or franchise are still reeling from some of the mistakes and it’s not worth pretending it’s a Chicago problem.
Be wary of the former hero that you wish as your next coach, manager or front office guru, you may end up with TLR Part 2.
