Forget the manager for five minutes and look at the Cubs roster over the past four seasons and it’s pretty obvious why they haven’t played postseason baseball.
When Kyle Schwarber hit a homer to lead off the bottom of the first in this afternoon’s game against the Mets we learned it was his 15th such homer of 2024. It meant nothing in the 6-2 loss, so I don’t want the homer to get lost in my message.
Since the Cubs bid Kyle adieu after the 2020 season (and got nada, zip, zilch for him), he’s hit 15 postseason home runs. The Cubs have hit a grand total of ZERO because they haven’t made the playoffs since 2020.
The Cubs have put together a bunch of rogue slap-hitters that hit the occasional long ball. I won’t name names because the thought of all of them is exhausting. The next crop of prospects with power potential are only a figment of our imagination. Jed & Company are still trying to paste together paint by number sluggers that can’t slug.
Remember that great power duo, Wisdom and Frank the Tank Schwindel, not to be confused with Fred and Adele? The Cubs PR machine had us all “believing” they were the second coming of Sosa-Henry Rodriguez.
Don’t get me started on the 163 homers he’s hit since leaving the Cubs.
