Sometimes when a notable character passes away you have to dig pretty deeply to find useful tributes. Thankfully, arizonasports came through in a pinch.
I was introduced to Al on one of my first trips to the Valley in 2005 or 06 and continued to listen to him as I covered the AFL and attended Cactus League games for the next 15 years or so. He was everything people say and more. Even when we don’t get to meet or personally interact with sportscasters, we feel we know them as they become a part of our lives. In the case of Al, he was the Suns and Rex Chapman’s comments speak to a different era of professional sports.

I wonder if the new wave of streamers will ever connect with the audiences or will move from platform to platform and working offsite?

PS I easily found a half dozen decent tributes online— AZ newspapers, AZ TV and radio stations, NBC Sports and many more sources. I saw the one which you referred to also.

Although I lived in Phoenix a short time, I quickly became a fan of Al McCoy’s calls of Suns’ games. His joy came thru the airways loud and clear. Pray for us left behind, Al McCoy.
