Last night, the greatest offensive force of the last 2 decades lost their second game in a row to the lowly Pittsburgh Pirates and they were blanked 5-0. I know as sure as I’m going to tie some kid’s shoes today, that Cub fans will be kicking and screaming.
After scoring 734 runs against some mediocre teams last week, everyone thought the Cubs had completely righted a ship that had been lilting for months. It’s not just the offense, they were playing better all-around baseball. This two-game slide isn’t part of come great market correction, it’s part of the game. While the Pirates and Nationals both have fallen below expectations, they were embarrassed by last week’s performances and have responded, sort of.
Does anyone realize that Aaron Judge, the presumed AL MVP and home run champ, has gone 8 games without a home run? His last homers came on August 25th. I bet the NY media has thoughts on this one and whether the commissioner will insert more funny balls this season. Incidentally, Judge and the Yankees visit Wrigley this weekend, and unless something spectacular happens on either front on Friday or Saturday, the finale will be a footnote as Caleb Williams makes his NFL debut.
