While the White Sox have nothing to do with the screening of a condensed documentary of “Last Comiskey” at a suburban Chicago library, Thursday night, it will be a bittersweet distraction for Sox fans trying to forget about the current season. I’m betting the panel discussion will stir up some emotions though.
While I remember the season (all too) vividly because the Cubs surprised some and won the NL East in 1989, the following years were miserable for the Cubs. Suffice to say, nobody on the field for the current Sox was in the bigs in 1990. Assistant pitching coach and local, Mike Gellinger was playing rookie ball in ’90 but has fond memories of the old ballpark. The point being, the documentary and book won’t resonate with the current team, nor should it unless they are history buffs.
Because we live in a hyper-digital age today, I wonder if anyone will piece together something on this (likely) historically bad season. Similarly, I wonder if any Oakland A’s fans are working on a documentary of the final season in Oakland. There is a terrific documentary on the history and departure of the Athletics in Kansas City. By the time the A’s settle in their new ballpark and city in Las Vegas, I wonder how many of this year’s roster will be wearing the green and gold.
Younger fans have very short memories so if and when the White Sox finish their current rebuild, I wonder how many of them will care about the Old Comiskey. I hope the event provides some solace for my Sox fan friends and relatives.
Other ML teams continue to crank out the promos and giveaways focusing on the past. Tomorrow night, the Cardinals are honoring Woody Williams with one of their regular Budweiser Bashes. The former Cardinal posted a 45-22 record over 4 seasons in STL, but has probably been forgotten by most of America. His bobblehead is a reasonable facsimile though and a nice collectible of “obscurea.”
Likewise, the Guardians are remembering, the great Indians superfan, John Adams with an outstanding ticket offer, $15 bleacher seats for the series against the Royals. For years, he was the drumbeat of the franchise. Also note the Peppermint Patty bobble.

The Guardians are the outlier as they are currently among the best teams in baseball whereas the White Sox and Cards have underperformed and need every nudge they can get.
