As a Cubs fan it’s not for me to litigate what’s gone wrong with the Sox organization the past few years. I can’t ignore what’s going on though as I have friends and family that root for the team inexplicably and I love the game.
With their 13-7 loss to the Twins this afternoon, the losing streak hit 20 games. Obviously, the guys on the position players have really (really) underperformed and maybe management overrated some of them too. Currently, they’ve won 27 games, and I’ve seen 2 of them in Cleveland and STL.
What’s surprised me the most is the absolute failure of the front office to take chances. While I expect them to make moves eventually, as of this moment, only 26 position players have made appearances for the Sox. Equally as baffling, only 25 guys have taken the bump to this point.
They haven’t taken any fliers on guys (other than Nick Senzel and Duke Ellis. They seemed reluctant in bringing up Bryan Ramos, Miguel Vargas and Brooks Baldwin=the latter only because they thought it was James Baldwin.
I’m not going through theirp pitching staff for my sanity, just take my word for it, they haven’t gone out on any limbs for temporary upgrades. GM Chris Getz had a very iffy trade deadline, not exactly flipping pieces for anything more than Vargas. The owner might be reluctant to pay the league minimum for random free agents (meaning guys released, not Free Agents) giving the fans something to root for. They’ve pretty much stayed with C-level players.
On the Sox website, they were highlighting the most confusing giveaway, the long-sleeved “performance” shirt???? I have no idea what a performance shirt means, especially for a team trying to lose 120 games.
While catching the last couple of innings on the radio, I learned the last time the Sox scored or more runs before today was July 3, when I saw them defeat Cleveland 8-2.
Incidentally, I have no idea why they moved the Cubs-Cards finale to the night game on ESPN. It seems like we’ve been privy to 287 in-game interviews with Cubs already. What more is there to say about another sub .500 club?
