Watching or listening to a baseball game at home has its advantages. Most notably, I don’t have to worry about finding a men’s room or the lines. By and large the concessions are pretty good and sunk costs.
More importantly, the commitment is different. For the most part, I prefer staying for the completion of the game when I lay out big $ or am a guest, but for night games I have to consider transportation-the time and cost.
When I’m watching/listening from home, I can check out whenever I want and without any goofy guilt. Last night, I opted out of the Cubs-Giants thriller after Ian Happ hit the three-run homer in the 7th. I’m not sure that I believed the game was as good as over, but I felt their chances of winning had greatly improved since one of the narratives was how spent the Giants bullpen was.
I only learned of the Cubs loss this morning and while I don’t live and die with each game (anymore) listening to the end of that game wouldn’t have been easy on my sleeping. It clearly wasn’t an instance of great foresight, rather I was pooped and opted for a better night sleep.
Bigger v. smaller picture
For whatever reason, I caught a little of last night’s pregame on the Marquis channel. The broadcasters in trying to explain what was wrong with the Cubs (sort of) dismissed being the victims of bad calls. Flash forward to the actual game when they reverted to homerism. It’s almost as if they completely forgot their pregame arguments.
This loss is going to be a tough one to swallow for everyone associated with the team.
