It’s been 25 years since my Dad passed away and there are times when it seems like it’s only yesterday that we attended games together and other days it feels every bit of 25 years. I’ve been to more games on Father’s Day since he died, but that doesn’t mean he hasn’t shared in the experience.
I was blessed with a great dad, and several wonderful uncles. I do my best to honor their memories every year. Amazingly we spent more time playing golf together on Father’s Day and I was happy to do so with friends for a few years after he died. However, I find myself at ballparks on the third Sunday of June more often than not. In fact, I’m heading to Milwaukee for the game today between the Reds and Brewers with friend David.
My wish is that dads enjoy the day doing what they enjoy most, grilling, fishing, walking, golfing, watching the U.S Open or baseball with those they love. In putting together lists of underrated performers, dads are often neglected and that’s a shame.
A shout out to those who will be celebrating Father’s Day without Dad for the first time. I won’t suggest it gets any easier, but you have to soldier on. It’s also a fun day for first time expectant fathers-enjoy the peace and quiet-the fun is only just getting started.
I’m a little scared to open any local sports section for fear they’ll cite the great father-son combos in Sox and Cubs history.
Thanks to all the unsung heroes, Dads, stepdads, foster dads, godfathers and Grandads! You guys totally rock!
Love you Dad!
