39 years later, Run DMC’s lyrics hold true. Unfortunately, I can’t stop myself from invoked those lyrics when a blabbermouth yammers on when silence is the better alternative.
With so many professional broadcasters trying to emulate historically great voices of the game, I’m amazed that so few are able to shut up when the action speaks for itself. One of the things that separated Vin Scully from so many others calling games was his willingness to let the moment speak for itself. It helped that he spent so much time on television. I think we all like to hear our voices and those in the media are no different.
While listening to the second inning of tonight’s game between the Phillies and Brewers on WTMJ (radio home of the Brewers). Former Phillie, fan favorite, Rhys Hoskins came to the plate for the first time since the 2022 World Series (in Philadelphia). In a rare moment of class, the Phillies fans showed their gratitude and appreciation for Hoskins with an extremely loud and protracted ovation. To their credit the Brewers duo did not speak over the crowd. Credit too for the audio. As impressive as the ovation was, the broadcasters let the audio tell the story. After the yelling was over they reminded Brewers fans how important Hoskins was to the Phillies success and how he reacted.
Vin Scully and Run DMC would be proud.
