I’m sorry that I didn’t get to see Paul Skenes dominate the Cubs on Friday, or Shota Imanaga do the same to the Pirates yesterday, I admit to being excited about today’s matchup between Mitch Keller and Jameson Tailon this afternoon at Wrigley.
I can’t remember the last time the Pirates were able to run out three above average starters in a row. Skenes, Jones, Keller and Falter have proven to be more than capable lately.
In recent years, it’s been harder to find worthy pitching matchups as one team is usually lacking or things don’t just sync up. Even if it meant a Cubs loss, as a kid I always looked forward to Jenkins v. Seaver, Carlton or Gibson. Just as likely it was Bill Bonham v. Wayne Twitchell. Unless one has season tickets or great flexibility, one can’t always see the best face the best.
Given how well the Cubs starting pitching (Tailon, Javier Assad, Imanaga) have been, it’s hard to believe that this particular Pirates lineup has gone toe to toe with the Cubs. The Pirates don’t resemble the team that won 98 games in 2015 with a +101 run differential.
Now that I’ve built up this game, I expect it to resemble a Anthony Young v. Steve Cooke battle of yuck. That’s what makes baseball so entertaining-one never knows.
