I know the modern baseball fan isn’t allowed to consider a starting pitcher’s W-L record and a position player’s batting average. We’ve been brainwashed into believing both of those stats don’t capture a player’s success or worth.
People wonder why the Cardinals stink (for a second year in a row) and after asking fans what they think (Marmol has to go), few were willing to concede that Paul Goldschmidt is costing them wins. He remains one of the better fielding first basemen, but during the team’s current funk, he’s been damn near invisible. His batting average is below the Uecker Line but more importantly, his 2 homers and 11 RBI haven’t changed since last Saturday (as of 1:55 pm on 5/12).
As one former ML ballplayer said, the Cards need to blow this thing up.
