I’ve held up writing about the most recent HOF class because I haven’t gotten that excited about the particular class. Adrian Beltre was a lock as a first ballot selection, and is the most complete and exciting inductee. The third baseman was the best at his position of this current generation. His love for the game and sense of humor rate him among the best.
First baseman, Todd Helton and catcher, Joe Mauer are less exciting and the latter doesn’t match up with any of the recent inductees at catcher. The fact that both played for only one team might be one of the reasons, their inclusion isn’t exciting.
The selections didn’t generate much heat in Chicago, the fans, and media are more interested in the 7-10 Bears. I’m betting the folks in New York, Cincinnati, and St. Louis aren’t any more excited. When I asked a Twins fan-colleague what he thought about Mauer, he hadn’t heard the news (4 days later).
I’m at that point in my fandom that I don’t find myself losing sleep over anyone’s inclusion or exclusion. Over the past decade or so, a handful of players have gotten in despite how I feel about them and their numbers. I will say that cousin Victor’s not receiving the requisite 5% to remain on the ballot puzzles me. If Mauer makes the Hall, Victor has a case to join cousins Pedro and Edgar. Silvio, Ted and Tippy aren’t worthy however.

And don’t forget cousin Mike who delivered a championship to you 7 1/2 years ago.
