I like Bears QB, Justin Fields but have absolutely zero emotional attachment to him. I appreciate that he toughs it out and gives it his all on the field, seems to respect his teammates, and has yet to say or do anything stupid off the field. I even acknowledge that he’s probably the most physically gifted quarterback in team history. I have no idea what his ceiling is as a professional quarterback, and neither does anyone covering the team.
While some sports fans love that the NFL season lasts 12-months a year, I’ve had enough 11 months ago. The longer this postseason lasts and the more games, Fields’ QB-contemporaries play, is another nail in my coffin.
Each one of these games is a referendum on Fields, his standing among league quarterbacks, and the available quarterbacks in the upcoming (not soon enough) draft. Everyone in town covering the team has had 217 different opinions on what the Bears should do with him and the #1 overall pick in the draft. The din is perpetual and irrelevant.
Justin Fields is the French’s Yellow Mustard of the condiment world. In general terms and as a default yellow mustard, French’s is alright at best, but I can think of at least 13 mustards (including 3 Koops flavors) that are better. I haven’t eaten a hotdog in over a decade, and at this point wouldn’t bother with French’s or any yellow at this point. A dollop of French’s on a condiment laden hamburger would be okay, I guess. But for any other product, I’ll choose a different mustard. I don’t have a favorite quarterback among the current crop, but I know there are more than a handful better than Fields.
Ultimately, I could wax poetic about several different brown mustards, those favored at ballparks across the country, honey mustards, and boutique mustards served at the hippest restaurants, but I think you get the picture.
At the end of the day, I’d rather spend all that QB energy solving the hole in the Cubs lineup because of Cody Bellinger, or that gaping hole in RF on the other side of town. Regardless, whatever the Bears decide to do, will honk off half the fanbase anyway.
