Forget the recent Braves World Series Championship for a moment. The team has been relevant since the Hank Aaron days with invisibility for almost a decade and then relevance since the 90’s.
The 7-8 Falcons come to Chicago to play the 6-9 Bears on Sunday and it got me to thinking how the Winter teams in Atlanta are complete afterthoughts. As a young person, I coined the Falcons and Hawks, “obscure” and what I meant was that I wouldn’t think of them when considering teams in their respective league.
Forget being selected with the last pick in the NFL draft, the Hawks and Falcons are completely irrelevant. Neither team has threatened the powers that be-even in the one season the Falcons played in the Super Bowl. That particular team is better known for an off-field incident than the game itself.
The NBA Hawks have had a history of nice players but have never challenged. Current star, Trae Young is doomed to never winning it all in Atlanta. When I think Hawks, I think Pete Maravich, Lou Hudson, Dominque Wilkins, Doc Rivers and Tree Rollins. Likewise, when I think Atlanta Falcons, all I come up with is Tommy Quid Pro Nobis.
Keeping this in perspective, until Lebron James joined the Cleveland Cavaliers, they were equally obscure or irrelevant.
One response to “Thank goodness for the Braves..”
Please don’t forget the Southern Illinois Stinger, Mike Glenn who happens also to be a great guy. Cavaliers were pretty tough in late 80s/early 90s but could not get past the Bulls.
