After a lot of stops and starts and really irresponsible reporting, Shohei Ohtani finally signed a 10-year, $700 million contract with the Dodgers. I hope he and his agent don’t opt out after 10 minutes or renegotiate the deal before I hit the big 6 0.
Someone reported that there are going to be deferred payments. I heard Shohei is helping the Mets pay off Bobby Bonilla’s deferred contract.
Finally, the rest of the baseball world can move past this deal and sign some players and make trades (good and bad). We can also stop calling every Yankee trade a blockbuster.
The Giants and Diamondbacks will have to determine whether it’s worth their effort playing this year since the Dodgers have assembled the greatest lineup in ML history. In all seriousness it will be fun to see what everyone else does.
The Soto-Yankees deal frees Cody Bellinger to negotiate with 28 other teams and everyone in the media can contemplate his hard hit rate.
My final baseball thought of the evening, if and when the Yankees don’t win it all in 2024, will they finally consider axing Aaron Boone? Is it too soon to be on the hot seat?
