Ordinarily, I don’t comment on televised games, but I’ll confine my comments to the broadcast itself with one thought on the state of the team.
Rick Sutcliffe was paired with HOF’er Pat Hughes the Marquis Network. It was a rare day off for the regulars. Usually, I’m not a fan of the usually gurgling Sutcliffe as everything always is coming up petunias regardless of the result.
Maybe the Cubs crappy play was too much for the always sunny Sut called the Cubs out on several occasions. As he should because Colorado is an absolutely horrible team. He was quick to point out how the multi-faceted mistakes were unacceptable against this particular team.
Hughes was clearly disappointed in the effort and end result, and you could hear it when he turned things over to the postgame show. Were it not such a lousy game, I’d suggest Sutcliffe’s call was refreshing because he wasn’t dressing up a swine. Unfortunately, other than a couple cute comments, the postgame duo glossed over the series debacle as a one-timer.
Everyone seems to have forgotten that the Cubs have lost five of their last seven games. They haven’t picked the best time to stink the joint up and hopefully, they’ll rebound in Arizona on Friday.
