I know how I feel when my team(s) defeat a rival and knock them out of the playoffs. It’s actually happened several times and I’m not ashamed of my pettiness-I consider it my duty. However, I find myself rooting for more individuals on teams I don’t particularly like so I’m an oddity in that sense.
I know Yankee fans hate the Astros or at least this version of the team. First, they have won two World Series titles in the last half hour. Second, they’ve knocked out the Yankees a few times. Third, and maybe most important, they probably believe they were illegitimate titles.
And unless there’s a September miracle the Yankees will not advance to the postseason. Short of keeping BoSox out, was the recent 3-game sweep of the Astros enough for Yankee fans? If it’s the three losses this weekend that eventually eliminates Houston, is that enough?
Likewise, the Padres have been equally as disappointing this season, but because they are the mellow Padres, I don’t think anyone else cares. That being said, one of their in-state rivals, the Giants are fighting for a wildcard spot and need every win they can get. Are Padres fans able to enjoy their weekend sweep of the Giants anymore because it could cost them in the hunt or are they too mad at their team to care?
I know both fan bases dislike the Dodgers enough to revel in late-season victories in the course of a down season. Last year the Padres knocked the Dodgers out in the NLDS which was probably enough during the offseason.
I think most fans wish players held the grudges against other players and teams the way we do and maybe they did, before they shared agents and endorsements.
