As every team plays every team each year, we knew the possibility could happen. The timing is fun though. In a few hours, the Mets will host the Cubs in a three-game series while the White Sox will host the Yankees in a 3-game set.

Coincidentally, the Cubs and Yankees are both 58-54, but the Cubs are the hotter club and sitting closer to the playoffs. They’re visiting a lousy Mets team that just cashed in on the ’23 season after committing a gazillion dollars on salaries.

Even though they are 23 games below .500, they are returning home after taking the last 2 games from Cleveland. The Yankees sit 4.5 games out of the last wildcard spot in the AL. If Sox fans want to take some solace in the Yankees misfortunes, I’m sure the Sox crews will have spoken with their Yankee contacts. I hope the Cubs crews will share with us over the next three days.

Ordinarily, spoiling things for an opponent was ample motivation for a bunch of proud players at this point in a lost season. We’ll see what the Mets and Sox are made of.
