Mets owner Steve Cohen has so much money he doesn’t know how to spend or save it all. In reading about his explanation for dumping Verlander and Scherzer on the poor folks of Texas, I realized I must have slept through that key Econ class back in the day.
The article spoke of the remaining Verlander and Scherzer contracts as being sunk costs that Cohen could easily absorb and that the prospects the Mets got back will offset the current/temporary costs. One of the prospects received is Luisangel Acuna, the younger brother of superstar, Ronald Acuna Jr.
Nobody including Acuna’s parents have any idea how Luisangel is going to do. They hype will be incredible since he’s going to play in NYC and compete against his big brother. It got me to thinking of brother combinations over the past 50 years or so-guys that I watched.
Every so often you’ll get guys that put up similar numbers like Joe and Phil Niekro or Bob and Ken Forsch. Cub fans will remember Rick Reuschel, but gladly forget brother Paul. Sticking with Cubs semi-recent history, you have the equally forgettable Danny and Hal Breeden.
The game is filled with several examples and I don’t want to minimize the accomplishment nor the significance for the families. The minute Luisangel makes his ML debut, the experts will start with the comps.
More importantly, Steve Cohen and Mets fans will have completely forgotten about the 2023, Verlander/Scherzer debacle, right.
