I think most of us are sighing with relief. The Rangers went out and traded for Max Scherzer, the recipient of the 21st century Jack Morris award. I’d reference The Six shooter, Have Gun Will Travel or The Magnificent Seven, but that would be piling on.
Even the most skeptical Mets fan couldn’t have seen them trading away Max in year 2 of his 3-year, billion-dollar contract. Nobody expected the Mets to fail this badly when they entered the season with Scherzer and Justin Verlander.
The Mets may ultimately win this trade and Luisangel Acuna may be as good as older brother, Ronald Jr, but until that happens, they’re going to have to fill that gaping hole in the rotation. I don’t know owner Steve Cohen, but I don’t know if he’s going to poop away an additional $45 million on the next pretty face.
How many other players are the Mets willing to sell off? Will Mets fans secretly root for Texas? The Rangers are all in-even after a really bad series with the hapless Padres. For the next day, Mets fans will be a little edgy as there has been talk of trading away Verlander as well.
Again, I don’t know how you’d sell this to Mets fans.
