The MLB draft

I only caught a couple minutes of the first round of the draft because like every draft, it’s awash in superlatives. It’s pretty hard to get legit, instant analysis. The media is trying too hard to pick the MVP of the 2026 season instead of sharing real information. It’s like going to one of those amusement park funhouses-too many bells, whistles and mirrors.

I don’t pretend to have any specific knowledge of any of the guys drafted. I’ve only seen a handful of CWS games this year and I watched for the pure enjoyment of the games and not scouting.

Fans who aren’t lucky enough to travel and see these guys play before they are drafted (in NBA, NHL or MLB) spend hours watching clips-sometimes endlessly. However, they only see the highlights and without any context at all. While the various leagues’ pre-draft camps are entertaining, they really aren’t meant for the general public.

It’s far more informative to watch athletes in game situations and not some contrived skill contest created for TV. Sports is the greatest unscripted reality show.

I’m excited for all of the guys that got picked yesterday and today and wish them all well. It’s more fun to watch players exceed expectations, but there will be plenty that disappoint-mostly themselves. Guessing which will be which is left to the experts-who rarely admit when they are wrong.

Congrats to the LSU Tigers for having the first teammates selected 1 and 2.

Here is Jonathan Mayo’s analysis of Round 1.
