Last night the LSU Tigers defeated the Florida Gators 18-4 to capture their 7th CWS championship. I don’t expect the local sports talkers to give the accomplishment the time of day and not just because the state of Illinois has never been very well represented in the tourney.
I caught a few more games than I usually do and would still like to make the trip west to Omaha some day. College sports fans equate the SEC with college football and national championships. I suggest everyone take a look at the conference’s record in the CWS. Over the years that I’ve covered the AFL, I found that the league was chock full of SEC alums, all of whom had crazy pride for their schools and conference.
In last night’s 2-1 victory over the White Sox, some guy named Shohei Ohtani took the league lead in homers (26) and RBI (62). He also happens to be slashing .297/.379/.630. He also is 6-3 with a 3.13 ERA in 15 starts. Forget about full-season projections, this is an MVP season. His cause should be aided by the Angels record (43-37).
