By pure happenstance, I caught4 minutes of NFL talk yesterday and didn’t immediately change channels. Somebody was opining that the differences between the best and worst teams wasn’t as drastic as its often portrayed.

Last week who would have thought the 12-win, Oakland Athletics would go on a 6-game bender? After last night’s win over the best team in baseball, the Rays, the A’s had won their sixth straight game (including a sweep of the Brewers and two games over the Pirates). The 18-win A’s aren’t going to compete in the AL West anytime soon, but this little run certainly has been entertaining.

It’s easy to dismiss last night’s game as a one-off because it likely is and Tampa does have the best record in the game. However, it was only an hour or so ago that the (then) last place Cubs took two of three from the Rays.

I never saw any of this coming and that’s what makes it great.
