I know the White Sox have developed a following in the Carolinas because their minor league affiliates play in the region-at least that’s what they used to say. I’m not sure that’s translated to bigger crowds at Guaranteed Rate Field or travel through Ohare and Midway.
I just received an email from the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers that Willy Adames will be making a rehab start in Appleton tomorrow afternoon. Based on past experiences with lesser players, I expect that hundreds of fans will make the trip north.
In the past, several Cubs have rehabbed at South Bend as well. Having at least one affiliate within an easy drive is good marketing. The White Sox played in South Bend as recently as two organizations ago, but never took advantage of the proximity to the south side.
With all due respect to the minor league broadcast crews for both organizations, the telecast quality is pretty mediocre. Due to the lack of quality cameras, minor league games are best enjoyed in person.
Until now, I hadn’t considered making a return visit to Appleton this quickly, but I may change my mind.
