To nobody’s surprise, the Cubs and Marcus Stroman turned around the season. Forget the last three games against the Reds. Okay, maybe they didn’t destroy the Rays, but they won 1-0.
After today’s game, the host that is on the Cubs radio station, threw open for discussion what the Cubs should do with Stroman. He has an option for 2024 and the host said that he’ll exercise the option. I’m not as certain of that because I don’t know Stroman and don’t put much weight on his emotional interactions with the media.
That being said, the team has to consider their options and where he would fit in their future plans. There are no guarantees that he’ll pitch to today’s form: 125-pitch, complete game, one-hit, shutout-ever again. However, the back of his Cubs baseball card has been pretty solid and he’s done very well at Wrigley. Is he the next Jon Lester or just another guy? I don’t think he’s in any hurry to negotiate because of today’s performance as he’s pretty confident in his abilities to repeat that performance.
Cub fans naturally assume that everyone wants to play for the Cubs regardless of the money. Some players mistakenly believe they have better chances with other franchises. Silly fools! We all know that’s folly.
Rather than worry about Stroman’s long term future, I’d like to see them maneuver towards .500 ball.
