An unpopular position

Before Sox fans get mad at me, I’m not posting about the Cubs current shortcomings because I’m unhappier than usual with Jed Hoyer’s explanations for their offensive shortcomings and Rossi’s poor decision making.

I’ve hit my breaking point with the Tim Anderson narrative. For most of Mark Prior’s Cubs career, we had to endure “When Prior gets back…”. For the last month, we’ve had to hear the same nonsense about how great the White Sox will be when Anderson is back in the lineup. Everyone pointed to the Sox record when he is in the lineup and missing.

The injury cloud and whether he’s truly healthy will hang over him like The sword of Byron Buxton. Since Anderson has returned on May 2, the Sox are a whopping 4-5 against the Royals, Twins and Reds. More importantly, he’s 7-36 with 4 runs, 0 HR and 1 RBI and a split of .194/.275/.194.

I’ve no doubt that he’ll revert to form and his hitting will reflect the back of his baseball card, but he sure as heck hasn’t come back and provided that energy or leadership they lack.

I can find players on every roster that have been and will be disappointments when they return. I’m also not trying to crush anyone’s spirit. I’m merely suggesting we don’t put all our hope in players that don’t have a long history of greatness.
