Yesterday I set out to preview last night’s A’s-Cubs pitching matchups, but then I realized it wasn’t that interesting. Neither starting pitcher, Hayden Wesneski-Cubs, nor Kyle Muller had a history with the other team. As both pitchers are (practically) rookies that’s no surprise.
Muller was acquired in the deal that sent Matt Olson to Atlanta. It’s hard to believe that moving to California would sap Muller of his potential, but the aura of the Athletics is real. As I just commented to a friend, until the A’s figure things out, opposing teams should “get well” anytime they play the A’s.
I’m not sure how continuing to stink helps their efforts to get a new stadium deal in town, or if it makes them a more attractive tenant in Las Vegas. It’s hard to believe that Michael Lewis’s Moneyball had anything to do with this franchise.
I fully expect the Cubs to make quick work of Oakland today and tomorrow. When you play a team is as important as anything else. The betting public may not have predicted the Cubs would win the series with the Dodgers, but this current road trip is looking pretty good.
