What have we learned?

Even though it’s only been 5-7 games, it’s natural to want to analyze, figure out what is going on with your team. Heck, if you are as goofy as I am, you might be curious about other teams (and not just the ones with high expectations).

The sample size is very small, but it’s never too early to start fixating on tendencies and trends. If your team has already suffered a bad loss or two, the manager or team leader’s probably invoked the “it’s only one game” nonsense. Tell that to Mets fans after their 101-win season (last year) was one win short of beating out the Braves for the division. Every win does matter when home field advantages are at stake.

Whether it’s week one or thirty-two, hometown broadcasters and managers are going to spin whatever is going on. It’s better that they do it so the players don’t have to answer for their mistakes and/or poor play. It’s also only natural for the homers to refer to every opponent’s base hit as ‘seeing-eye’ or soft contact. The Network’s Billy Ripken has already called a moratorium on suggesting how many hits would have been outs last season (because of the shift). Shortstops are still straddling the left side of second base. However, it’s nice to not see a third infielder sitting in short right field.

Two teams were recently pounded into oblivion in the just-completed three-game series. In both cases apologists for both teams tried to minimize the damage done to their respective pitching staffs.

In one case, the worn out narrative that it doesn’t matter if a team loses by scores of 12-3 and 16-6 as losses are just that, losses. Usually, these same guys talk about getting into an opposing team’s bullpen early in a series so as to soften them up.

Is anyone in NYC happy with Max Scherzer’s early performance? $40 million+ for 11.1 innings and a 6.35 ERA is a strain on an already weak Mets bullpen. Luckily, the Phillies are stinking up the joint at a record pace.

I think the Sox new manager, Pedro Grifol is happy that they got blown out by the Giants 2/3 games because nobody is questioning him. Those losses were on the players-nobody can blame him for that, right?

One of the biggest non-surprises is the Rays 6-0 start. People that don’t follow a team in the AL East probably can’t name the Rays starting ten, but likely aren’t surprised that they’re doing it again. Maybe the highlight of the season will be the ability of every fanbase to see the Rays play their team this season. Conversely, we’ll all get a chance to see the Athletics and Nationals.

Enjoy the second weekend of the season!
