Is the pressure mounting?

Thank God for Dansby Swanson! If he continues at the rate he started, he’ll end up with 357 hits this year. I know that’s impossible, but 310 is likely, right? In every ML city, there’s a columnist and a half dozen fans extrapolating what the new guy in town will accomplish this season. Conversely, I don’t think many Cub fans think Cody Bellinger is going to go hitless in 550 at-bats.

As a rule, we tend to weigh players’ first weekend numbers to heavily. It’s especially bad if the player is new and is making a boatload of money. Expectations are necessarily high and almost impossible to meet in three games.

Swanson couldn’t have gotten off to a more impressive start than he did. It almost distracts us from what the other newcomers didn’t accomplish. Some guys need to get off to a quick start and not just to justify the big contract, but rather to re-establish themselves in certain situations. Other players are coming off injuries or down years.

It’s almost impossible to be reasonable. Some of us have been waiting forever for the season to begin. We inflate everything-save for Dansby Swanson’s hit totals.
