I haven’t done a deep dive into Cody Bellinger’s numbers at Great American Ballpark, but I’m hoping he busts out this week against the Reds. Earlier today I read a silly column where the author said that the Bellinger deal (and others) were bargain-driven and failures (already). I suggested columns like this were being written in most baseball cities already.
For any number of reasons certain players find comfort zones in various visiting ballparks. In recent years, Kris Bryant, Kyle Schwarber, and Ian Happ, all had historically great starts to their respective careers at GABP. Maybe it was the river air, the lousy Reds pitching, the German food or Skyline Chili? Whatever the reason, Bellinger needs to find his sweet spot.
Coincidentally, several Giants hitters found their footing this afternoon at Guaranteed Rate Field. There’s no possibility that they caught Michael Kopech on an off day. If you try and figure out why players do well in certain parks, you’ll pull your hair out. When teams get crushed, their default apologists concede they “Just got beat.” and rarely offer constructive criticism. That’s not to say that some days stuff happens and all you can do is toss it aside and move on.
If Bellinger can unlock the beast, maybe Trey Mancini and Edwin Rios will follow suit.
