Raise one to Harry!

Forget the lousy impressions and the oversized glasses, sidle up to a bar (real or imaginary) and toast Harry Caray for the 25th time. That the big celebrations are taking place at his various namesake establishments is perfunctory. It’s hard to believe that it’s been 25 years since Harry passed away, and yet it makes complete sense.

It’s more than celebrating Harry’s legacy as a broadcaster/promoter of the game. It’s about celebrating the start of the baseball season in the company of strangers and friends alike in a great environment. Harry was more than the Cubs, White Sox, Cardinals and Athletics. He was about having a good time and telling it like it was-that he happened to talk about baseball for a living is coincidental.

Even though the original and best of his restaurants has an ideal location downtown, one would be as likely to find Harry tending court at any number of local establishments. I can bear witness to that although I never saw him out on the town after a night game.

At the time of his passing and this memorable first toast, nobody knew what the 1998 season would mean for Chicago, the Cubs and MLB. For various personal reasons, it was one of the most memorable seasons in years. I had far too much on my mind to get caught up in the Roid chase for 60-whether you believe it or not.

1998 was significant in our family for numerous reasons, beginning with the passing of my Uncle Ed. Nobody pegged the ’98 Cubs as playoff contenders and I don’t think anyone saw that the legend of Ron Santo would be enhanced.

For the moment, let’s just kick back, slug down a Bud or two and be happy baseball is back. I know Harry’s grandson, Chip is happy to work in STL where Harry got his start.
